Adult Driver Education FAQs
Who MUST take the adult driver education class?
If you are between the ages of 18 and 24, you MUST take the 6 hour adult driver education class before you can apply for either a learner's permit or a regular driver's license.
Who MAY take the adult driver education class?
Anyone over the age of 18 may take the adult class. Some students take this class to help better prepare them for the learning-to-drive experience. If you do not have a permit yet, and you want to learn to drive, this class might be just the help you are looking for! We provide special instruction to help you not only pass the DPS permit exam, but also assist in acquiring knowledge to help make you a better driver. Most importantly, we will give you the permit exam at our school. When you pass the test, we will then give you the certificate required by DPS to get your learner's permit or take the behind-the-wheel test for the regular driver's license, if you are ready.
How do I sign up for the class?
Phone our office to see which Saturday will be best for you. Our number is: 512-257-7099. The class starts at 9am and ends at 3pm with a working lunch that we provide for you.
When do I get my permit?
At the end of the class, you will receive an official state certificate showing that you have successfully finished the class and passed the written exam. You will get your permit when you take this certificate and required documents to DPS. The certificate does not have an expiration date.
What documents do I need to get my permit?
When you go to DPS after you have completed the class. You will need to take the following documents with you:
- Your Adult Driver Education Class Certificate
- Your original Birth Certificate (or current US passport or Green Card)
- Your Social Security Card
- The completed DPS applications (2 forms)
- $25 cash or check
- If you are here on a work visa, you must provide a letter from your employer stating you are currently employed.
After I get my permit, when do I learn to drive?
You may begin taking lessons immediately after receiving your permit. You will be given a paper permit from DPS for you to use until your laminated permit arrives in the mail. You are ready to start your lessons!
